Barack Obama arrived in Iraq this morning for talks with Iraqi officials and U.S. commanders over a 5-year-old war he has pledged to end. His arrival follows a weekend visit to Afghanistan, a part of an overseas trip that will include other stops in the Middle East and Europe.

Barack Obama said in Afghanistan yesterday that “the situation is precarious and urgent here in Afghanistan. And I believe this has to be our central focus, the central front, on our battle against terrorism.”

Secretary of State Condi Rice accused Iran this morning of not being serious at weekend talks about its disputed nuclear program despite the presence of a senior U.S. diplomat, and warned it may face new sanctions.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson warned Americans yesterday that it may be months before the nation’s troubled banking system can work its way through this period of uncertainty.

The idea of a summer gas tax holiday died a quick death in Congress this weekend, losing to a view that federal excise taxes on has and diesel fuel will have to go up if they go anywhere.
