Barack Obama held talks with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak this morning as the Dem White House hopeful began a day of meetings in Israel and the Palestinian territories on the latest leg of his international campaign trip. Obama is due to meet with Palestinian leaders this afternoon.

Barack Obama said yesterday there was “no doubt” that Gen. David Petraeus opposes setting a deadline for withdrawing American combat forces from Iraq, but said the situation is improving and that the U.S. urgently needs to turn its attention to Afghanistan.

Amid speculation that John McCain will announce his Vice Presidential running mate this week, the AZ Senator avoided answering any questions on a timetable for the decision yesterday. Adding fuel to speculation is a planned meeting today between McCain and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

At a private fundraiser last week in Houston, President Bush, unaware that he was being recorded, joked about the country’s housing crisis and said wall street is hung over because it “got drunk.”

Hurricane Dolly is expected to strengthen slightly before making landfall today on the Texas-Mexico border, bringing with it up to 15 inches of rain.
