The House Judiciary Committee yesterday voted to cite former top White House aide Karl Rove for contempt of Congress for failing to appear at a July 10th hearing regarding allegations of White House influence over the Justice Dept, including whether Rove encouraged prosecutions against Dems such as former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman. The Senate Judiciary Committee is exploring punishment of Rove.

A new campaign ad from John McCain, which flashes images of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, calls Obama a Megacelebrity as well, and questions his leadership ability.

Barack Obama tapped into the economic worries of middle-class voters yesterday, saying John McCain would stay on a reckless economic course taken by President Bush.

Congress appeared deadlocked yesterday on responding to the nation’s energy problems amid a bitterly partisan rift over whether to open long-restricted offshore waters to oil and gas drilling. A Dem proposal to counter oil market speculation fell victim to the drilling dispute.

In a huge win for the Dems, President Bush quietly signed a massive mortgage rescue bill without ceremony at the White House yesterday. It was the same bill that he once derided as being “overly socialistic.”
