Barack Obama unveiled his energy plan yesterday, which includes a windfall profits tax on big oil corporations that would be used to provide a $1000 rebate to people struggling with high energy costs. Obama also called for tapping into strategic oil reserves as part of his plan to provide relief from high gas prices.

John McCain also spoke about energy policy yesterday, attacking Obama for his opposition to nuclear power and offshore oil drilling, and three times giving a forceful version of the line, “we need to drill here and we need to drill now.”

A group of House GOP-ers stayed in session and continued energy speeches yesterday despite the summer adjournment in hopes of pressuring Dems for a vote on oil drilling. They pledged to continue the speeches throughout the week.

The Pentagon has ordered roughly 1,250 marines serving as trainers for the Afghan security forces to stay on the warfront in Afghanistan a month longer to continue a mission that military leaders say is a top priority. Defense secretary Robert Gates has also authorized the deployment of up to 200 other troops to the country to support the marines.

Winds are beginning to pick up and surfs are rising in Galveston, Texas this morning as Tropical Storm Edouard is closing in on the Texas coast. Meanwhile, rain bands and tropical storm force winds are spreading across coastal Louisiana.
