John Edwards admitted Friday that he repeatedly lied about an extramarital affair with a 42-year-old campaign employee, but strenuously denied being involved in paying the woman hush money or fathering her newborn child.

Hillary Clinton will headline her own night at the Democratic National Convention, Barack Obama’s campaign announced yesterday in a nod to her strong second-place showing in the party’s presidential primary. She will speak on the second night, Tuesday, Aug. 26 – the 88th anniversary of the women’s right to vote.

Both John McCain and Barack Obama spoke to Georgia’s president Saturday and continued to call for an end to Russia’s bombing of the former soviet republic. Both candidates pressed for recognition of Georgia’s sovereignty and pushed for diplomacy in the conflict.

McCain’s campaign manager yesterday repeatedly declined to rule out the possibility that he may pledge to serve just one term. According to “the politico,” McCain could combine the one-term pledge with a vow that he would run an apolitical administration.

Michael Phelps’ quest for Olympic history continued this morning with a 4x 100m freestyle relay gold medal that moves Phelps within one gold medal of tying the all-time mark of 10.
