Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), chairman of the House select committee on energy independence and global warming, calls in at 7:30am pacific to talk about the latest in what congress is doing to address gas prices and our dependence on foreign oil.

Barack Obama’s campaign confirms that he will hold an event in Springfield, IL Saturday, kicking off the “roll into the convention” – but would not confirm or deny reports that he might be joined on stage by a running mate.

Obama, speaking before the veterans of foreign wars convention, challenged John McCain yesterday to stop questioning his “character and patriotism.”

McCain traveled to a Chevron oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico yesterday to deliver an attack on Obama. “Obama opposes new drilling,” McCain said. “He has said it will not ‘solve our problem’ and that ‘it’s not real.’ he’s wrong, and the American people know it.”

Secretary of State Condi Rice and her Polish counterpart signed a deal today to build a U.S. missile defense base in Poland. This prompted an infuriated Russia to warn of a possible attack against the former soviet satellite.

Tropical storm Fay moved just off the east coast of Florida early today. The storm is expected to hug Florida’s Atlantic coast and strengthen slightly before making a hard left turn back into northeastern Florida.
