As another financial crisis loomed with the possible collapse of insurance giant American International Group (AIG), the Federal Reserve stepped in last night to take control of the company by providing up to $85 billion in loans.

Barack Obama said yesterday that the country is facing the “most serious financial crisis in generations” and argued that rival John McCain would only make it worse by sticking with the economic policies he and Bush subscribe to.

Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO turned top McCain aide, said yesterday that she doesn’t think Sarah Palin is qualified to run a major corporation. For that matter, Fiorina said, McCain, Obama, and Biden aren’t capable of that kind of job either.

Allies of Alaska governor Sarah Palin stepped up attacks on state lawmakers investigating the firing of her public service commissioner yesterday, calling it a “McCarthyistic” inquisition and asking judges to block the probe.

The House last night passed an energy bill clearing the way for more oil drilling off U.S. coasts, but not nearly as much as G.O.P. leaders wanted. Many GOPers opposed the bill because it would allow new oil drilling only between 50 and 100 miles offshore.
