Wall Street plunged again yesterday as anxieties about the financial system ran high after the government’s bailout of insurer A.I.G. failed to restore investors’ confidence in banking stocks. The Dow lost about 450 points, giving it a shortfall of more than 800 so far this week.

Key GOP-ers on Capitol Hill blasted the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve yesterday for orchestrating an $85 billion bailout of A.I.G., and the White House for not informing them of the plan. Dems blamed the Bush Administration for the financial crisis, while the White House pointed a finger at congress.

GOP Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin took questions with her running mate last night, offering at one point to play “stump the candidate” with a mostly friendly Michigan crowd. Asked for “specific skills” she could cite to rebut critics who question her grasp of international affairs, she replied, “I am prepared.”

Aides to Gov. Sarah Palin won’t comply with subpoenas issued by Alaska state lawmakers investigating the firing of Alaska’s former Public Safety Commissioner because Palin “has declined to participate” in the probe, her Attorney General says.
