White House negotiations over the proposed $700 billion bailout of the financial system dissolved into bickering, begging, and a roiling battle between parties last night. Lawmakers argued over competing counterproposals and wound up without any bailout deal on the table. Negotiations resume this morning.

JP Morgan Chase acquired the banking assets of Washington Mutual late last night after the troubled thrift was seized by federal regulators, marking the biggest bank failure in the nation’s history and the latest stunning twist in the ongoing credit crisis.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) said he expects both presidential candidates to be at tonight’s debate, even though John McCain has said he’ll only go if Congress reaches a deal on the bailout.

Alaska lawmakers investigating Sarah Palin’s firing of her public safety commissioner accused the McCain campaign yesterday of stonewalling the probe by helping witnesses refuse to comply with subpoenas.
