The federal government would put up as much as $700 billion in a far-reaching plan to rescue the nation’s troubled financial system, according to a bill unveiled by lawmakers on Sunday. The House is expected to take up the bill today and the Senate is expected to move on the bill on Wednesday.

Senators Barack Obama and John McCain said yesterday they would probably vote for the government’s proposed bailout legislation once they check out the final details.

Investors reacted coolly after congressional leaders announced the bailout plan. Dow Jones futures were down 188 points this morning.

A new USA Today/Gallup Poll shows 46% of people who watched Friday night’s presidential debate say Barack Obama did a better job than John McCain; 34% said McCain did better. Obama scored even better – 52% to 35% – when debate watchers were asked which candidate offered the best proposals for change to solve the country’s problems.

Academy award winning actor and well-known philanthropist Paul Newman died Friday at age 83, surrounded by family and close friends at his Connecticut farmhouse following a long battle with cancer.
