Joe Biden gave a knowledgeable but restrained performance in last night’s Vice Presidential debate (the only V.P. debate before next month’s election), while Sarah Palin sought to show that her accomplishments as Governor and Mayor prove she is qualified for the job.

A CNN/Opinion Research national poll of people who watched the V.P. debate last night suggests that Joe Biden won, but also says that Sarah Palin exceeded expectations. 51% said Biden did the best job, but 54% said that Palin was more likable.

The McCain campaign is pulling the plug on trying to win Michigan’s 17 electoral votes, a state they had previously thought they could win. He has cancelled an event there and is expected to halt his campaign’s television advertising. The campaign is blaming the economic crisis for McCain’s bad showing there.

A wave of House converts jumped aboard the $700 billion bailout yesterday on the eve of a make-or-break second vote, as lawmakers responded to an awakening among voters to the pain ahead of them if stability isn’t restored to the tottering economy. The outcome is still far from assured today.

An Alaska judge refused yesterday to throw out subpoenas for members of Gov. Palin’s administration in the state legislature’s investigation of her firing of her Public Safety Commissioner.
