While the Bush administration shifts course on its $700 billion rescue plan by abandoning a mortgage purchase plan in favor of buying troubled bank stock, Congress is examining whether even bigger changes should be made in the program in light of the deteriorating economy and soaring mortgage foreclosures.
President-Elect Obama will dispatch former GOP Rep. Jim Leach and former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, a Democrat, to represent him among world leaders attending the global economic summit in D.C. next weekend. Obama is not attending, deferring to President Bush.
Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK), who was convicted of felony charges last month, fell behind by three votes yesterday as the count resumed in his re-election bid. Dem Mark Begich, the 2-term mayor of Anchorage, began Wednesday down more than 3,200 votes but closed the gap as officials resumed counting early and absentee ballots.
Vice President Cheney, getting ready to hand off the job as the nation’s second in command, will sit down with Vice-President-Elect Joe Biden today at the Naval Observatory. A spokeswoman says Cheney and Biden will have a private meeting then tour the residence.
