President-Elect Obama plans to nominate New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson to be Secretary of Commerce today. Richardson has served as a U.N. Ambassador and as Energy Secretary in the Clinton administration.

GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss claimed victory yesterday in the Senate race in Georgia against Dem Jim martin, killing democratic hopes of gaining enough seats to halt filibusters. With 99% of precincts reporting, Chambliss had 57% of the vote, while martin got 43%.

Plagued by rising unemployment, falling tax revenue, and increased demand for state services, the nation’s governors met with President-Elect Barack Obama and Vice President-Elect Joe Biden yesterday to press for federal money to ease their fiscal strain.

The chief executives of Ford and G.M. joined their Chrysler counterpart yesterday in agreeing to accept salaries of $1 a year if Congress comes through with a bailout for the automakers. The statements came as the big three automakers turned in financial plans to Congress, hoping to bolster their requests for $25 billion in bridge loans.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said yesterday “there is no timeframe” for his tenure at the Pentagon. He said that Obama and he agreed that his commitment would be open-ended.
