Senate Dems and the White House failed to find 60 votes to end debate on a $14 billion auto rescue bill and bring it to a vote last night, killing the measure for the year. The 52-35 vote followed the collapse of negotiations between Senate Dems and GOPers seeking a compromise.

Overseas markets are plunging this morning after the auto rescue package failure in the Senate last night, intensifying fears about a protracted global slump and setting the stage for a steep drop in U.S. markets this morning. More dire economic data from the U.S. and news of deep job cuts at Bank of America also added to the gloom.

President-elect Obama again yesterday called for Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to step down, saying the embattled governor can no longer effectively serve the people of Illinois. Also, Key Illinois Dem legislators are circulating a letter urging support for the impeachment of Blagojevich.

President-elect Obama announced yesterday that he has chosen former Sen. Tom Daschle to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. Obama said Daschle would also serve as the director of the White House office of health reform. Obama said that Daschle will be responsible for implementing his health care plan, and will be the lead architect of that plan.
