Tonight On The Randi Rhodes Show

HEAD PAIN AT THE TEA DANCE

It won’t be long now before Obama reaches for the Excedrin Migraine. So many headaches in so little time!

He’s got Rod the Blog Crash Helmet-Hair Jegonivich in Chicago where visibility is nearing less than 50 feet due to the Mud Storm, Iraqis throwing shoes at well, everyone and burning flags in the streets, Cheney on the TEE VEE declaring himself a Sociopathic War Criminal obviously in need of a world class prosecution, and now furious gay activists returning from the Obama honeymoon because of his pick for the Invocation at the Inaugural, Rick Warren of the Saddleback Church!

The evangelical pastor can be given credit for tempering some of the Falwell era nastiness towards gays, pro choicers and libs in general.  Let’s not forget Falwell and Robertson were damning gays to hell and blaming 9/11 and Katrina on plans for a parade and something Jesus NEVER SAID about them.  So Saddleback seems a bit lukewarm to the fire breathers, but nonetheless, Warren has opened up the ugly narrow worldview of those very same Moral Majority types and endorsed things like Prop 8 and compared same sex marriage to incest and pedophilia.

On the other hand Warren has opened formerly closed minds to think about and act on AIDS in Africa, hunger in America, and being kinder to the Earth. But he was a vocal supporter of Prop H8, and still insists like his fiery predesessors, on being given instant unquestioned credibility on all things “Bible” simply because he’s got ‘Pastor’ in front of his name.

His contention that for 5000 years ALL religions have defined marraige as one man, one woman is patently false!  Made up out of very thin parchment, sheer bunk.  Same sex commitments have been recorded in history since well before Christ and of course in the day.  The one and only Jesus Christ who gave a lot of thought to these things never once commented on homosexuality. Seriously, in all the orations, sermons and even in casual conversation with his disciples he said NOTHING about homosexuality or gay marriage ever.

Warren does have a generous number of clear eyed opinions on straight divorce. He does acknowledge that it is a much larger problem in American family life than same sex marriage to his credit, but stating the obvious and then obfuscating on the Bible is so Unbiblical.

And that makes Pastor Warren a hypocrite.  A hurtful hypocrite.  But does he mean to be?  Do intentions matter?

Yes, Warren rightly says there are many more important issues than gay marraige facing the world, but he’s all too quick to jump into mob mentality when it comes to appeasing the fire and brimstone crowd.  Could it be merely a ploy to keep DONATIONS alive?  After all, there’s oodles of fundraising to be done on this issue.  So get out your check book End timers give to The Saddleback Church and buy very cute shoes ahead of The Rapture.  Hell is freezing over (in Connecticut anyway. Getting colder in California too).

As for gay activists there is a legitimate sense of betrayal and hopelessness now directed toward Barack Obama.  Suspicions about Dynastic Cabinet positions aside, an entire community that supported his candidacy with all they had are going to have to watch one of their chief foes on the matter of their CIVIL RIGHTS be given a place of honor on the very day we all hoped to kick off the new era of change!

Gays were hoping for a far better reception than they got from Bill Clinton who stumbled like a doofus on gays in the military and tripped us all up when he signed into law The Defense of Marraige Act in 1996.  It should be noted that at his 1997 Inauguration The Invocation was given by evangelical legend Reverend Billy Graham.  That went over really well and of course all the bonding with the Evangelical Community really paid off didn’t it? Barack? You listening?

Obama has said he wants to make a place at his table for evangelicals. Fine.  But if that means caving on some of the most important civil rights issues of our time and crushing the hearts of some of his most ardent supporters, then Brother, this is going to be one uncomfortable start to another disappointing dance.  Tea anyone?
