Israel was set to pause its Gaza offensive for three hours today to allow food and fuel to reach besieged Palestinians, and the country’s leaders debated whether to accept an international cease-fire plan or expand the assault against Hamas.

President-elect Barack Obama forecasted close to a trillion-dollar deficit and potentially more trillion-dollar deficits “for years to come” after meeting for the second day with his economic team in D.C. He said that “an extraordinary amount of money” will be invested in an economic package that will “jump-start our economy.”

President-elect Obama has approached CNN’s chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta to be the country’s next surgeon general. Gupta is also a neurosurgeon and is on the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. During the Clinton administration, he was a White House fellow and special advisor to then-first lady Hillary Clinton.

Outgoing Senate Rules Committee Chair Dianne Feinstein said yesterday she disagrees with her Dem leadership’s move to block Roland Burris from being seated in the U.S. Senate. “Does the governor have the power, under law, to make the appointment? And the answer is yes. Is the governor discredited? The answer is yes. Does that affect his appointment power? The answer is no, until certain things happen,” she said.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has decided he will not seek Florida’s open senate seat in 2010. The younger Bush said the time isn’t right for him to return to public life.
