Today is Chris Lavoie’s birthday.

Illinois Senate-designate Roland Burris said yesterday that he is “truly humbled and honored” to learn he will be seated in the Senate later this week. Earlier in the day, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Illinois senior senator and Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin said the Senate would accept Burris’ credentials.

President-elect Barack Obama plans to order the closing of the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay as early as his first week in office to show a break from the Bush administration’s approach to the war on terror, according to two officials close to the transition.

In his final news conference yesterday, President Bush candidly reflected on the mistakes and milestones of his eight years in office, conceding he made some mistakes but forcefully defending some of his most controversial actions. Bush was at times contentious, reflective, even apologetic during his swan song with the DC press corps.

President-elect Obama asked President Bush yesterday to request the release of the second $350 billion in federal bailout funds so he would have “ammunition” if the country’s fragile economy weakened further. The White House said that Bush agreed to request the money.

Game show host and comedian Howie Mandel was expected to be released today from a Toronto hospital where he was taken after he experienced an irregular heartbeat. His publicist says that Mandel did not have a heart attack.
