A US Airways flight went down in the near-freezing waters of the Hudson River off the West Side of Manhattan yesterday afternoon shortly after the pilot reported two bird strikes. Some 150 people were aboard the plane en route to Charlotte, NC from LaGuardia Airport and all were rescued with no major injuries.

In his final public address from the White House, a reflective President Bush last night recalled the ups and downs of his 8-year tenure and said he was willing to make the tough decisions. He acknowledged setbacks and said he would have done some things differently.

President-elect Barack Obama won a significant political victory yesterday as the Senate voted to release the second half of the $700 billion bailout package. In the House, Rep. Barney Frank has put forth what he calls a “trust and verify” bill that would place tighter restrictions on how Obama can spend the remaining bailout funds. The House decided yesterday to delay a vote on the bill until next week.

Attorney General nominee Eric Holder admitted during his confirmation hearing yesterday that he “made mistakes” during the Marc rich pardon incident, and said that he learned from them and the experience would make him a better A.G.
