Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) calls in at 6:30am to talk about the economy, President Obama’s news conference last night, and how Obama is doing so far.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) calls in at 7:06am to talk about President Obama’s news conference last night, Obama’s economic recovery plan, and the other political news of the day.

President Obama appeared before a national audience last night to make the case for his economic recovery plan, saying this is not your “run-of-the-mill recession.” The president stressed the urgency of passing the $838 billion measure, which his administration and Dem leaders say will help pull the U.S. economy out of its current skid.

As expected, GOP Sens. Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, and Arlen Specter yesterday all voted “yes” on a procedural vote to end debate on the economic recovery plan. The total vote was 61-36 in the Senate and it now advances to a final vote on the bill today.

President Obama was on the road yesterday in Elkhart, Indiana, campaigning for swift passage of the massive recovery plan he argued would create jobs in hard hit places in the American heartland. He’s set to travel to Ft. Myers, Florida today where he is expected to be introduced at a rally by Florida’s GOP Gov. Charlie Crist.

Alex Rodriguez is now the highest-profile Major League Baseball player to confess to cheating in baseball’s steroids era. He told ESPN yesterday he used banned substances while playing with the Texas Rangers from 2001 to 2003.
