The tally of confirmed swine flu cases in the U.S. jumped yesterday from 160 to 244 in 34 states, but officials said that’s largely from catching up on a backlog of lab tests rather than a sudden spurt in new infections.

President Obama said Friday he will replace retiring Supreme Court Justice David Souter with someone who shares the president’s respect for “constitutional values” and hopes to have “him or her” seated on the highest U.S. court by the start of its next term in October.

Jack Kemp, the former pro quarterback who turned fame on the football field into a career in national politics and a crusade for lower taxes, has died of cancer at age 73. Kemp was a former quarterback for the Buffalo Bills and Bob Dole’s running mate in 1996.

A Dallas Cowboys scouting assistant suffered a broken back and has been permanently paralyzed after the collapse of the team’s practice canopy during a heavy thunderstorm Saturday. A total of 12 people were hurt in the incident.
