President Obama marked another 100-day anniversary yesterday – this time the anniversary of the enactment of his $787 billion economic stimulus package. Obama told a crowd in Nevada that “we are already seeing results” from the federal government’s economic boost.

Opponents of California’s voter-approved ban on same-sex marriages launched a new court challenge yesterday, led by lawyers who were on opposite sides of the case that settled the 2000 presidential race. Attorneys Ted Olson and David Boies have asked a federal judge to block California from enforcing the ban, known as Prop. 8.

Newt Gingrich has called Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor a racist, and he’s demanding that Obama’s pick withdraw her nomination. On Twitter, Gingrich said that “new racism is no better than old racism.”

North Korea fired two more short-range missiles from its east coast early today. The firings came a day after the reclusive communist state conducted a nuclear test and fired another short-range missile. The U.N. Security Council condemned Monday’s nuclear test as a “clear violation” of international law.

President Obama marked his first Memorial Day as president yesterday, calling on Americans to remember U.S. troops who died in the service of their country. The president participated at the 141st annual Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery’s Tomb of the Unknowns.

California’s Supreme Court decides today at 10am Pacific whether gay marriage is legal in the most populous U.S. state, a key battleground in American culture wars. Some leaders from both sides of the gay marriage issue have predicted that the California justices will uphold the ban but also allow approximately 18,000 same-sex marriages from last summer to stand.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, long a fierce critic of Beijing, toured China’s financial capital of Shanghai yesterday on a visit focused on environmental issues rather than human rights, though her presence emboldened Chinese protesters, imploring her to pay attention to human rights abuses.

President Obama is expected to announce his Supreme Court nominee this week, perhaps as early as today. He has said he will pick an intellectual heavyweight with a “common touch” who will see life from the perspective of the powerless.

President Obama and former Vice President Dick Cheney offered competing views on how to keep America safe in back-to-back speeches yesterday. Obama said his administration is trying to clean up a “mess” left behind by the Bush administration. Cheney stood up for Bush’s security record, arguing that Obama has weakened the country’s ability to combat Al Qaida and other extremists.

The Senate late yesterday easily passed a $91 billion spending bill for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan after stripping the bill of funds to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay. The Senate included an amendment to prevent the public release of pictures that reportedly document the mistreatment of post-Sept. 11 detainees in U.S. Custody.

President Obama will sign into law today a bill that will bar credit card companies from arbitrarily raising interest rates on existing balances and charging certain fees. Included in the bill is an unrelated measure that would allow people to bring loaded guns into national parks and wildlife refuges. Most provisions in the bill will take 9 months to go into effect.
